ADDITIONAL SERVICES

PROVIDED AND AVAILABLE AT THE NERJA CAVE

At the Nerja Cave, you will find special activities and services designed for children and young people, perfectly complementing excursions and educational visits for schools and institutes.

Visiting the Nerja Cave means exploring Andalusia’s most important natural monument, declared a Cultural Heritage Site in 2006, under the Archaeological Zone category. We are recognized as a Historic-Artistic Monument and a “Spanish Geological Site of International Relevance,” as proposed by the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute, due to its paleontological and geomorphological significance.

The Nerja Cave, known as the Natural Cathedral of the Costa del Sol, is located 750 meters from the coast, about 200 meters above sea level, on the Sierra de Almijara’s face. It is situated five kilometers from the town center of Nerja, in the Maro locality. The cavity covers an area of approximately 35,000 square meters, with a maximum horizontal length of 700 meters.

The Nerja Museum is the perfect complement to understanding the culture and history of the municipality of Nerja and many of the secrets of the Nerja Cave. It is included with the cave visit, allowing visitors to explore it for free—provided it is explicitly included in the ticket. This space offers a rich perspective on local history, from Prehistory to the present day, highlighting the most important aspects of each historical period.

As a significant cultural hub in Nerja and the Axarquía region, the Nerja Museum hosts a wide range of activities throughout the year, including concerts, theater performances, children’s workshops, book presentations, poetry recitals, and more. Additionally, it regularly features temporary art exhibitions in the Ana María Márquez Room.

The Virtual Reality experience at the Nerja Cave offers visitors an immersive journey. It enhances the physical tour of the cave by using cutting-edge technology to showcase rooms and secrets not accessible during the regular visit. This experience is presented in a 360º video format, enjoyed through next-generation Virtual Reality headsets.

This complementary service, included with the Nerja Cave ticket, takes place in Europe’s largest Virtual Reality Room, where the fictional character Tadeo Jones welcomes visitors and guides them through the adventure.

Through this digital visit, we can explore how Earth and the Nerja Cave were formed, and how humans lived in the cave 35,000 years ago. The experience simulates first-person immersion, as if the visitor—through VR glasses and surround sound—were actually there. This allows for an authentic recreation of prehistoric life and the experiences that took place inside the Nerja Cave.

Additionally, the experience highlights the cave’s prehistoric paintings, which make it one of Europe’s most significant pictorial references. Visitors also gain insights into geological, archaeological, and scientific curiosities.

Since May 2023, more than 300,000 people have visited this Virtual Reality experience.

Children and young people with reduced mobility can also participate in these school excursions, thanks to a special Virtual Reality experience offered in the Virtual Reality Room: the Virtual Reality Tour of the Nerja Cave.

The Nerja Cave visit follows a circular route that includes a total of 458 steps, making it inaccessible for people with reduced mobility. Additionally, wheeled vehicles cannot enter due to steep inclines and narrow spaces.

One of the Nerja Cave Foundation’s goals is to provide a more accessible and inclusive experience for everyone. In the case of reduced mobility, this has been achieved through Virtual Reality technology.

In the Virtual Reality Room, visitors can take a Virtual Reality Tour of the Nerja Cave, allowing them to explore the cave’s interior immersively. This experience lasts 10 minutes.

If your school group includes children or young people with reduced mobility, please indicate this when making your reservation. This experience will be combined with the Tadeo Jones Virtual Reality Room, which lasts 12 minutes and is included in all visits for all students in the group.

Located within the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara, and Alhama Natural Park, the Detunda-Nerja Cave Botanical Garden preserves plant species from southwestern Granada and eastern Málaga. This garden is set within a diverse landscape and geological environment, featuring a wide variety of endemic species—plants that only grow in this specific area.

Walking through the Botanical Garden, accessible from the Nerja Cave premises, visitors can observe a vast collection of typical Mediterranean flora, perfectly adapted to long periods of summer drought.

In addition, this natural area features displays of traditional crops from the region. The garden also houses a collection of orchids and rare plant species, making it a unique and fascinating attraction.

The Detunda-Nerja Cave Botanical Garden is managed by the Junta de Andalucía and can be accessed from the cave’s premises, with the entrance located behind the ticket office area. It is open daily from 10:00 to 15:00. However, we recommend checking in advance, as its operating hours are set by the Junta de Andalucía, not the Nerja Cave Foundation.
