Music Festivals

Explore a hidden treasure deep within the earth: the Music Festivals of Nerja Cave, where the past and present blend into a symphony of emotions.

  1. Spain after the Civil War and World War II was isolated from the international scene. In the context of the Cold War, and with the goal of distancing European countries from communist influence, international organizations were created, including cultural and sporting ones where Spain had a place (European Association of Music Festivals in 1952, European Cup in 1955, and Eurovision Song Contest in 1956).

  2. The Festivals of Spain were created by the Ministry of Information and Tourism in 1954, taking the San Remo festival as a reference, and as a form of propaganda for the Franco regime on the international scene. Historical sites such as the Greek theater of Montjuic in Barcelona, the Roman theater of Sagunto, the Generalife Gardens of the Alhambra in Granada, or the Porticada Square in Santander would be promoted; the latter two had been developing since 1952.

  3. The first festival in the Cueva de Nerja took place on June 12, 13, and 14, 1960, and was immediately integrated into the structure of the Festivals of Spain. Along with the Nerja festival, 35 Spanish cities were included in the National Festival Plan of 1960 with 110 ballet and lyrical performances; 28 concerts and 75 theatrical performances, with an audience exceeding 1,250,000 people.

  4. Currently, of those cities, only Santander, Granada, and Nerja continue to develop a music and dance festival, making the Nerja Cave Festival one of the oldest in Spain in its category.

  5. Similar pattern from 1960-1977: no official presentation, the same company, two to three consecutive days of festivals, starting between 19:30 and 23:00 hours and during the summer months, initially in June, but gradually moving to August, with an average attendance of 500 spectators and a price range between 275-400 pesetas.

  6. Alternation of classical or “white” ballet with “Spanish” ballet, and all the shows were accompanied by live music from the Malaga Symphony Orchestra.

  7. There is no presentation of the festival, so the announcement is picked up by the press. Propaganda carried out by ALAS, CID Publicidad, or Diana Publicidad.

  8. 1975. Most innovative festival. It features eight days of performances with three ballets and Manolo Sanlúcar accompanied by the Malaga Symphony Orchestra.

  1. After Franco’s death, Spain began a period of transition towards democracy, marking events such as the Spanish Constitution, the first democratic elections, admission into international organizations like NATO, the EEC, or the 1982 Soccer World Cup.

  2. Similar pattern from 1978-1985: festival presentation in newspapers, the same company, two to three consecutive days of festivals, starting at 23:00 hours, during the month of August, with a capacity of 824 spectators and a price range between 250-1,200 pesetas.

  3. Antonio “El Bailarín”’s farewell from the stage at the 1978 festival. The most innovative festival in 1984 in both styles and for the first time taking the performances out of the interior of the Cueva de Nerja.

  4. Lack of imagination in alternating classical or “white” ballet with “Spanish” ballet. The performances are musically accompanied by recorded music played through speakers during the shows.

  5. State companies recently created by the Ministry of Culture such as the Spanish National Ballet or National Classical Ballet offer their first performances in Nerja.

  6. Changes in the festival such as the installation of a permanent metal structure grandstand, which came to replace the one that had to be built every year out of wood.

  7. The managers of the Trust, due to the lack of capacity of the Sala de la Cascada, created an ideas competition in 1984 for the construction of a permanent open-air auditorium, with a capacity of 2,000 spectators and located in the exterior enclosure.

  8. Activities prior to the festival such as exhibitions of works from the Nerja Children’s Painting Studio and award ceremonies for students with the best academic records from the Instituto Nuestra Sra. de las Angustias, today IES Sierra Almijara, began to be developed. The Nerja Cave Research Awards were created.

  9. More inclusion of the people of Nerja by granting protocol tickets every year to councilors of the Nerja Town Hall and to local retirees.

  10. The Cueva de Nerja inspired Víctor Ullate’s work Choreographic Fantasy in the Cueva de Nerja.
    1. Full consolidation of democracy in Spain. The signing of the Maastricht Treaty, the Barcelona ’92 Olympics, or the Seville Universal Exposition solidified democracy on the international stage.

    2. Similar pattern from 1986-1996: a variety of shows, from 5 to 10 performances per festival mainly on the weekends of July, starting at 22:00 hours, with an average capacity of 800 spectators and ticket prices ranging from 500 to 7,000 pesetas.

    3. Starting in 1991, the festivals will be presented to the press and the general public in the Sala de la Cascada of the Cueva de Nerja. The table was presided over by the president of the Trust, who was the Civil Governor, and consisted of the president of the provincial council, the mayor of Nerja, the manager, and various members of the Nerja Cave Trust.

    4. The festival will be expanded with various shows where there will always be music and classical ballet, flamenco companies, and orchestras (accompanied by choirs or solo artists).     6. July 26, 1991. Attendance at the festivals by Her Majesty Queen Sofía, accompanied by the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Manuel Chaves, during the concert of Mstislav Rostropovich.

    7. July 21, 1991. For the first time in its history, a performance by an ensemble composed entirely of women: The Ladies Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Anna Hristoskova.

    8. Dressing rooms were renovated, located in the Sala de los Fantasmas, and the backdrop of the stage was expanded.

    9. The Nerja Cave Trust, together with the Nerxa Philatelic and Numismatic Club, issued a commemorative postmark of the festival, designed by Francisco Hernández, depicting Maya Plisetskaya.

    10. Festival organized by the Nerja Cave Trust with the collaboration of the Civil Government, the Provincial Council of Málaga, and the Nerja Town Hall, beginning to promote the festival as the “Intimate Concert of Europe.”

    2. Concentration of all performances within one week instead of over several weekends with the goal of definitively consolidating the festival and supporting local tourism activity.

    3. Varied shows, 5 or 6, in the last weeks of July, starting at 22:00 hours, with an average capacity of 800 spectators and prices ranging from 2,500 pesetas (15 euros) to 10,000 pesetas (60 euros).

    4. Presentation of the festivals in different venues (restaurant halls of the Nerja Cave, Villa de Nerja Cultural Center, Nerja Tourism Parador, or the Government Subdelegation in Málaga). The festival is promoted with the slogan “You will never know if you have seen it or dreamed it”.

    5. The 1999 and 2000 festivals held some performances outside the Sala de la Cascada of the Cueva de Nerja, also alternating performances in the Villa de Nerja Cultural Center.

    6. 1999 and 2009. Commemoration of the 40th and 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Cueva de Nerja. Various events are held throughout the festival.

    7. For solo performances, and to increase contracting options and dispense with an orchestra, a grand piano is introduced for the first time in the Sala de la Cascada.

  2. Reduction of performances inside the cave. Diversification of stages: Sala de la Cascada and the external gardens at the Cueva de Nerja, and the Balcón de Europa and Plaza de España in Nerja. From four to eleven performances per festival. Start time at 22:00 hours. From free entries at the Balcón de Europa and Plaza de España to 40 euros in the Sala de la Cascada.

  7. Different ticket prices depending on the chosen area. New ticket sales point at the Nerja Museum.

  8. Traditional structure with classical music, dance, flamenco, and song. The festival joins the FestClásica association.

  9. The 2019 festival will set the trend for future editions: elimination of the Sala de la Cascada as a festival venue, enhancement of the auditorium in the external gardens with an increase in capacity, increase in budget, and incorporation and financing by Grupo Mundo Management S.A.

  10. July 27, 2019. Concerto Málaga. Last presence of the Festival de la Cueva de Nerja in the Sala de la Cascada.
    1. International events such as COVID-19, the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, and the effects caused by inflation, mark this period.

    2. December 2019. As a conservation measure for the cave, the Plenary Board of the Nerja Cave Foundation approves the cessation of performances inside the Cueva de Nerja.

    3. After sixty editions held uninterrupted, the health crisis and the resulting economic difficulties led to the suspension of the festivals in 2020 and 2021.

    4. 2022. Five performances with different styles: pop, flamenco, singer-songwriter, urban music, and flamenco-fusion.

    5. New auditorium named “Manuel del Campo” in honor of one of the promoters of the contest, within a setting surrounded by nature. Increase in audience to 2,445 people. Chill-out area, called “La Terraza de la Cueva,” as a complement to the end of the shows.

    6. 2023. 15 shows in a festival that stretches from June 30 to August 12. Preservation of the past.

    7. Two stages: auditorium, with a capacity of 2,000 seated and 2,700 standing, with more than 30,000 tickets for sale, and a chill-out area with concerts and thematic parties after the shows.

    8. Remodeling. New auditorium flooring, new restrooms, and landscaping improvements. New shopping tour area (souvenirs, gastronomic space, interactive photo call, etc.).

    9. Commitment to sustainability. 800 parking spaces available in different areas, shuttle buses, and a tourist train.

    10. First festival in Spain with the Q for Quality and the S for Sustainable Tourism recognized in 2022.
