Cave Art in Nerja Cave: Paintings, Engravings, and Portable Art<\/span><\/h3>

Nerja Cave<\/strong> is one of the largest archaeological sites in the Mediterranean Europe<\/strong>. Its chambers were visited by prehistoric groups<\/strong> over 41,000 years ago<\/strong>, although archaeological excavations, for now, only reflect an occupation recorded since the Gravettian period<\/strong>, with continuity in all phases of the Solutrean<\/strong> and the presence of the Upper Magdalenian Mediterranean<\/strong>, all of them located in the period known as the Upper Paleolithic<\/strong>. These Pleistocene cultures are followed by Epipaleolithic occupations<\/strong> and intense use, especially for burial purposes, during the Neolithic<\/strong> and the Copper Age<\/strong>, already in the Holocene<\/strong>.<\/p>

However, the cave stands out archaeologically for housing one of the largest collections of cave art<\/strong> in the world. The oldest artistic manifestations<\/strong> seem to date back to around 35,000 years ago<\/strong>; however, the largest number of manifestations corresponds to the Solutrean sanctuary<\/strong>, around 20,000 years ago<\/strong>.<\/p>

Prehistoric artistic manifestations<\/strong> were mostly executed in red pigment<\/strong>, although black pigment<\/strong> was also used. They are mostly distributed in the Tourist Galleries<\/strong>, although Solutrean artists<\/strong> also left their mark in the Upper Galleries<\/strong>.<\/p>

Over 50 figurative representations<\/strong> have been identified, limited to a very small set of animals: deer<\/strong>, horses<\/strong>, goats<\/strong>, seals<\/strong>, fish<\/strong>, and a possible red schematic representation of the female figure<\/strong>.<\/p>

The most abundant remains are evidence of a graphic code, clearly visible in the formation known as the “Organ<\/strong>.” These are signs<\/strong> arranged in series of dots and strokes<\/strong> that could be the earliest form of graphic communication by humanity<\/strong>.<\/p>

Magdalenian groups<\/strong>, authors of such important works as Altamira<\/strong>, only left behind series of strokes and signs<\/strong> executed in black pigment<\/strong> in Nerja. These can be found in very restricted areas of the Upper Galleries<\/strong>, which are difficult to access. Interestingly, the dating of these charcoal-drawn graphics places them in the early stages of the Magdalenian period<\/strong>, with the paradoxical absence of stratified Magdalenian lower and full occupations<\/strong> in the excavated sequence.<\/p>

Some evidence of astonishing craftsmanship, such as the red seals<\/strong> in the Chamber of Fish Shapes<\/strong> in the Kitchen Hall<\/strong>, do not yet have a clear dating, possibly representing the oldest works of art in Europe<\/strong>. Excavations have recovered minor stone and bone objects, portable art<\/strong>, with representations of signs<\/strong>, including a duck<\/strong> in one case that can be seen in the Nerja Museum<\/strong>.<\/p>

But Neolithic<\/strong> and Copper Age societies<\/strong> also left their artistic manifestations in the cave. These are schematic representations of the human figure<\/strong> drawn in red<\/strong>, such as the well-known ‘Dancers<\/strong>‘ in the Torca Hall<\/strong>, likely archers<\/strong>. Engravings<\/strong> have also been identified, such as those found on the vaults of the “Red Children’s Ledge<\/strong>” in the Cataclysm Hall<\/strong> or on several flags<\/strong> in the Kitchen Hall<\/strong>. These engravings are known as “bitriangular<\/strong>” and resemble human figures with or without sexual attributes<\/strong>. They are related to funeral cults<\/strong>. They are not shown to visitors due to their fragility<\/strong> and the inaccessibility<\/strong> of the cave sectors used by prehistoric artists<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
