The Nerja Cave Research Institute (IICN)<\/strong> was established in 1999<\/strong> with the aim of fulfilling the objectives outlined in the statutes of the Public Foundation for Cueva de Nerja Services<\/strong>, which pertain to the research, conservation, and dissemination<\/strong> of the Natural and Cultural Heritage<\/strong> of the Nerja Cave<\/strong> and its surroundings. It is a non-profit research institute<\/strong>, composed of the scientific staff of the FPS Cueva de Nerja<\/strong>, and fully funded by this organization.<\/p>

The Research Institute is governed by a Scientific Advisory Council<\/strong> that is responsible, among other aspects, for developing the research lines<\/strong> and projects<\/strong> to be carried out by the Foundation. It also proposes the organization of symposiums<\/strong>, conferences<\/strong>, workshops<\/strong>, publication plans<\/strong>, or any other activities aimed at the dissemination<\/strong> and scientific understanding<\/strong> of the Nerja Cave<\/strong> and its surroundings. The Scientific Advisory Council<\/strong> also suggests measures for the proper conservation<\/strong> of the cave<\/strong>, considering the social<\/strong> and economic<\/strong> function derived from its rational and sustainable<\/strong> use.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The headquarters of the Nerja Cave Research Institute (IICN)<\/strong>, located within the cave’s own premises in the technical services building, has various facilities: a research library, laboratory, microscopy area, technical storage, a cabinet dedicated to the Espeleoclub Cueva de Nerja<\/strong> and the Espeleosocorro<\/strong> service, offices, and temporary researcher accommodation.<\/p>

The research library of the Institute of Research<\/strong> was established in 1995<\/strong> with the aim of making the bibliographic and documentary resources of the Cueva de Nerja Foundation<\/strong> available to researchers, students, and interested professionals. It contains approximately 2500 volumes<\/strong>, organized into the following sections: Prehistory, Geology, Microbiology, Zoology, Botany, Protohistory, History, Caves of the World, Geological Maps, Doctoral Theses, Audiovisual Documents, and Specific Publications about the Cueva de Nerja.<\/p>

Another complementary scientific facility is the Cueva de Nerja meteorological station<\/strong>, equipped with instruments belonging to the Andalusian Environmental and Water Agency<\/strong> and the Spanish Meteorological Agency<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
